Advance Design Consultants – Go-To Folks for High-Tech Facilities

When Silicon Valley serial entrepreneurs such as Sun Microsystems founder Andy Bechtolsheim need a home for their newest ventures, Lorenzo Rios and his team at Advance Design Consultants (www.adcengineers.com) are the go-to folks.

Experts in mechanical, electrical, and plumbing design for high-tech companies, ADC is currently remodeling facilities in Santa Clara for Bechtolsheim’s latest venture, Arista Networks – which develops software and equipment for the hyper-fast, hyper-scale computing networks of the next decade – and FUJIFILM’s subsidiary Dymatix – one of the world’s top manufacturer of inkjet printheads.

These companies choose Santa Clara addresses for easy-to-understand reasons. “Arista was looking for a city that was friendly to new businesses,” explains Rios. “Santa Clara was great in meeting the company’s needs and approving their plans in a timely manner.”

April 6 Wine-Tasting and Raffle to Benefit Kiwanis Turnaround Scholarship

Next Wednesday enjoy some fine California vintages while supporting Kiwanis Club’s Turnaround Scholarship fund. The award recognizes young people who have overcome difficulties – any one of a host of well-documented learning, family or personal problems that can throw students off-course – and are now headed for college or specialized career training.

“Some of these students have so many problems at home, that getting to school at all is an achievement,” says Santa Clara Kiwanis member Rick Mauck.

More than 100 scholarships are awarded each year. In addition to wine-tasting and hors d’oeuvres at Campbell’s elegant Villa Ragusa, there’s a raffle for a variety of prizes, with one lucky guest taking home a $1,000 grand prize. Santa Clara County Supervisor Mike Wasserman is this year’s Honorary Chairman.

The Kiwanis Turnaround Scholarship Benefit is Wednesday, April 6 from 6:00p.m.to 8:30 pm, at Villa Ragusa, 35 South Second St. (between Campbell Ave. and Orchard City Dr.) in Campbell. Tickets are $35. For more information, call (408) 867-1701.

Delizioso! Soroptimist Festa Italiano

Pasta lovers were out in force for Santa Clara Soroptimist club’s second annual Festa Italiano last Friday. Over 100 diners enjoyed the all-you-could-eat spaghetti dinner followed by a raffle at Santa Clara’s Mariani’s Restaurant.

The turnout exceeded the service club’s expectations, according to event coordinator Merrilee Dunn, raising about $1,200 the service club’s charitable programs. “Mariani’s was wonderful in supporting us,” says Dunn.

Over the last half-century, Santa Clara Soroptimists have contributed more than $500,000 to local non-profits as well as the club’s annual Christmas Store and Women’s Opportunity Award scholarships. RDA Money Maneuvers Getting State Scrutiny

Despite assurances from the City Attorney, some Santa Clarans continue to wonder about the legality of last week’s City Council move to stash redevelopment money with a private business entity of the 49ers football team.

While Gov. Jerry Brown’s office isn’t commenting about specifics, state officials “will be looking very closely at the agreements that are struck” by California cities – including Santa Clara – that move assets and revenue from redevelopment agencies, says Elizabeth Ashford, a spokeswoman for Gov. Jerry Brown.
