Agnews Campus Construction Contracts Get Clearance

Before they can enjoy their summer break, the Santa Clara Unified School District (SCUSD) School Board held a very brief meeting on Thursday, July 11 to approve construction contracts for the Agnews Campus.

The meeting was only about 2 minutes long, but, in that time, the SCUSD School Board approved over $30 million in contract awards for the new Agnews Campus when they voted approved their consent calendar.

The Board awarded multiple contract bid packages for earthwork and landscaping at the 600-student Agnews Elementary School. Work is scheduled to begin within two weeks. Total: ~$9 million. Also for Agnews Elementary, the Board awarded almost $4 million in contracts for site preparation and over $7 million in contracts for other work.

The Board awarded multiple contracts in bid packages for drywall, metal framing and fireproofing, as well as landscaping for the 1,000-student Agnews Middle School. Work is scheduled to begin within two weeks. Total: ~$10,800,000

They also approved some Change Orders for previously awarded construction contracts. According to the meeting’s agenda, “The total sum of Change Orders for each contract is either a) less than 10 percent of the original contract amount or b) less than $15,000, whichever is greater.”

Finally, the Board approved the Purchase of Builder’s Risk Insurance with Alliant Insurance Services, Inc. for the Construction of the Agnews Elementary and Middle Schools. The premium cost about $437,000 for the policy term, which is July 17, 2018 through October 31, 2020. According to the meeting agenda, “The policy covers all risk of direct physical loss or damage from covered causes including earthquake, fire, flood and storm.”

 

Other Business

The only action item on the meeting’s agenda was the approval of Provisional Internship Permit Request for the hiring of Saleha Farhad. Farhad will teach Special Education (Kindergarten/1st Grade) at Hughes Elementary for the 2019/2020 school year.

The Board approved the request 6-0 — Board Member Jim Canova was absent from the meeting.

The SCUSD School Board have their Board Retreat on Tuesday, Aug. 6 and their next regular meeting is on Thursday, Aug. 8 at 6:30 p.m.
