At a time when we read about cutbacks and financial belt-tightening, it is refreshing to learn of one non-profit organization assisting another.
At the end of last month, according to President Jim Narveson, the “Santa Clara Arts and Historical Consortium unanimously voted to donate $2,000 to Skills Plus, recognizing that Skills Plus is a very important organization. Skills Plus provides a program of education and training for survivors of stroke and other neurological impairments.”
Santa Clara Arts and Historical Consortium headquarters is in the Headen-Inman House at 1509 Warburton Avenue in Santa Clara. It consists of twenty local non-profit groups. “Most of the things we wanted to have done on the Headen-Inman House were done in the last three years,” continues Narveson. “We want to be self-sustaining, and Skills Plus has always relied on outside funding. Their funding was cut by necessity,” he concludes.
“This money is greatly appreciated. It will help keep the program going. It is nice that both the Consortium and Skill Plus are local in Santa Clara. We want to keep our programs here,” comments Becky Pestarino, Skills Plus Supervisor. The Skills Plus teachers empower students by “working on basic skills, like walking, communicating, and independence,” according to Pestarino.
